The Happy Wheezer

We had another first this week -- Tony's first trip to the ER. Before I go any further I will say that he is totally ok, but gave us a good scare. On Tuesday night, we noticed that Tony was breathing heavy, like he couldn't catch his breath. The next morning we noticed it some more. We made a doctor's appointment for that afternoon. When I dropped him at school I told Sonja that if he wasn't doing better or if she noticed anything that she should call me. At about 11am I got the call. I immediately went to pick him up, and tried to go to the doctor early. There weren't any times available so we went straight to Children's Hospital ER. Tony had a bunch of nurses look at him and two doctors. He had his chest listened to about a dozen times, rectal temp taken, heart rate monitored, a nebulizer, an x-ray, a nasal swab, more listening and monitoring and then another nebulizer. The diagnosis: pneumonia. He seemed just fine except for the wheezing and shortness of breath, so I can only describe him as having baby walking pneumonia. The doctor called him a "happy wheezer." Throughout it all Tony did well. The worst was the nebulizer. He didn't care for being held down one bit. He didn't make a peep during his x-ray (sidenote: I think he seems so big now, but when he was on the x-ray table I realized how little he really is). The x-ray tech said that he was one of two kids she's ever seen not cry. He had some apple juice and was ready for a nap after all the excitement. He's on antibiotics and we got a nebulizer in case the wheezing returns, but other than that he is back to his old self!
