Johnny Appleseed

Tony had his first field trip and I chaperoned my first field trip. All I can say is, "Ooofffff. Wow." It was to Afton Apple Orchards. We had to eat breakfast at home, dressed in appropriate clothes (it was 50 and rainy), car seat removed from the car, and to school by 8:30am. Mind you, we do this most days minus breakfast at home, and get to school even earlier, but I choked under pressure. We got to school a bit late, but luckily we were not the only ones. Once we were all there, we loaded on to the bus. Tony was thrilled to be on a big, yellow bus. Of course, many rounds of "The Wheels on the Bus" were sung with special attention paid to the bus drivers saying, "Move on back!" All the car seats in the front few rows and the parents and older kids in the back. I had no idea you could strap car seats in a bus. It looks hilarious.

When we arrived at the apple orchard we all took a hayride. Tony LOVED it. He laughed and pointed at things the whole time. He also learned a new word - tractor. We made three stops - two for apple picking and one for pumpkins. Tony was very confused as to why he couldn't have the apples on the ground. There is no reasoning with a 19-month old, so one meltdown ensued. He was not the only one. The ground apples were confusing to everyone. After the tractor ride, we had a snack and piled back into the bus. There wasn't a single kid awake by the time we got back to daycare. I was close to napping, too. I felt terrible for the teachers who had to deal with the fallout, but it was a lot of fun to go, so that made it all worth it - at least to me.
